Alex Shackell Just off Best Time with 2:07 200 Fly at Indy May Cup
Alex Shackell was just off her best time in the 200 butterfly Friday night en route to a win at the Indy May Cup.
Shackell went 2:07.16. That’s just .03 off her best time from Speedo Sectionals. More telling, it’s well quicker than the meet record she set last year at 2:08.68, a potential harbinger of her form for Olympic Trials next month.
Michigan took the next two spots, with Hannah Bellard in 2:11.55 and Katelyn Crom third in 2:12.29.
The race of the day was a battle between Olympians, with Lilly King again getting the better of Kotryna Teterevkova. King led at the midway point but had to rally over the final 50 meters to get to the wall first in 2:24.62, edging the Lithuanian by .13 seconds. No one else was withing six seconds.
Chris Guiliano won the 50 free 22.34, the national teamer .17 seconds up on Michigan’s Bence Szabados. Daniel Baltes was third in 22.53, with Blake Pieroni following in 22.60.
Michigan had a strong day all around. Crom was also second in the 400 free. Jack Wilkening went 53.37 to dominate the men’s 100 back, well ahead of the 54.62 swum by Wyatt Davis for the meet record last year. Brady Kendall went 25.09 to win the women’s 50 free.
Kendall edged a pair of swimmers who tied for second, Indiana’s Kristina Peagle and 16-year-old Julie Mishler, in 25.14. Gabi Albiero was fourth in 25.31.
Aaron Shackell made it a Shackell 200 fly sweep. He went 1:58.57, eight tenths up on Zach Harting. Ryan Merani was third.
Indiana’s breaststroke contingent ruled the men’s 200 breast, though in perhaps a surprising order. Benson Wong claimed the win in 2:12.70, .23 up on Josh Matheny. Maxwell Reich was fourth, with Jassen Yep fifth. In between was Charlie Swanson. Tommy Cope, out of the B final, had the third-fastest time of the night in 2:15.31.
Charlotte Crush won the women’s 100 back in 1:01.04, outdueling Ayla Spitz’s 1:01.18. Reigning champ Amy Fulmer was third in 1:01.28. Kayla Han claimed the 400 free in 4:10.18.
