With two No. 1 rankings and a No. 2 finish, Lucy Thomas (Brookfield East, Wis.) edged the next four swimmers\u2014all by just one point\u2014who finished in a tie for third. Scotty Buff (Toledo St. Francis, Ohio) also placed second by a point\u2014and two points ahead of fourth and fifth\u2014in a tight competition that saw four of the top five swimmers set national high school records.<\/p>\n

\nAt this summer\u2019s World Championships in Fukuoka, Dan Wiffen became the European record holder in the 800 meter freestyle to add to his continental standard in the short-course pool. When asked what advice he would give to young swimmers, the Irish Olympian answered, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what age you are, and it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re not very good when you\u2019re younger. You can always be a good senior swimmer\u2014you just have to put the work in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMany swimmers begin the breaststroke arm motion with straight arms so that the hands move above the shoulders into a weak position. A more effective motion is to flex the elbows so that the hands move below the shoulders into a strong position. Swimmers can see and feel the outward scull to better control it. Drills, such as swimming every other stroke of breaststroke without breathing, can help a swimmer master the skills necessary to control the outward scull.<\/p>\n

\nNOVA of Virginia\u2019s Nathan Szobota, coached by Mike Wenert, has experienced swimming success on the local, national and world stages. He won the FINA World Junior Open Water 5K last September, and at the spring NCSA Champs, he became the fastest 15-year-old ever in the 1000 yard freestyle. The now 16-year-old recently clocked Olympic Trials cut times in the 400-800-1500 free and 400 IM.<\/p>\n
