SANTOS, Brazil, September 14. A number of South American and Brazilian records were set from September 6-11 during the Trofeu Jose Finkel. The competition, a short-course event, featured 14 South American records. Leading the way was Kaio Marcio de Almeida, who made record-breaking seem simple throughout the week.<\/p>\n
De Almeida established South American records in the 50-meter butterfly (23.17) and 100 butterfly (51.00) and rounded out his record sweep in the fly with a mark of 1:53.89 in the 200 distance. Meanwhile, Kristel Kobrich (Chile) was sensational on the female side, as she set new continental records in the 800 freestyle (8:31.27) and 1,500 free (16:02.11).<\/p>\n
In the women\u2019s 200 individual medley, Brazil\u2019s Joanna Maranhao clocked in at 2:12.42 for a South American record and Fabiola Molina set a new mark in the 50 backstroke, as she negotiated the distance in 28.37. The 400 freestyle saw records from both genders, as Armando Negreiros went 3:44.73 for the men and Mariana Brochado went 4:08.17 among the women. Negreiros also set a record in the 800 free (7:47.17).<\/p>\n
Other South American records were supplied by Flavia Delaroli in the women\u2019s 50 fly (27.32) and by Lucas Salatta in the men\u2019s 200 backstroke (1:53.96).
