SHEFFIELD, England, August 9. THE man is on a roll, plain and simple. Blazing 48.68, Simon Burnett established a British record in the 100-meter freestyle during the Commonwealth Games Trials on Tuesday. Burnett\u2019s time dipped under his own national standard, a 48.76 mark from the semifinals. Burnett clocked 23.12 for the opening 50 meters and remained strong down the stretch.<\/p>\n
Burnett\u2019s record in the two-lap event handed him a sweep of new standards in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. After setting a British mark in the 200 (1:46.59), Burnett took down the national record in the 50 free, as he scorched 22.12. Certainly, Burnett will be one of the main guns for the British squad at next year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
In other action from Tuesday\u2019s finals, Liam Tancock took top honors in the 100 backstroke. The bronze medalist in the 50 back from the recent World Champs in Montreal, Tancock finished the race in 55.12. He was joined as a victor by Melanie Marshall in the women\u2019s 100 free (55.50), Katy Sexton in the 50 backstroke (29.14) and Michael Rock in the men\u2019s 100 butterfly (54.26). Rosalind Brett prevailed in the women\u2019s 50 fly (27.30), Chris Cook claimed first in the men\u2019s 50 breast (27.82) and Kerry Buchan won the women\u2019s 200 breast (2:30.02).
