IN the prelims of the men’s 200-meter backstroke this morning, only Club Wolverine’s Christian DeJong could manage a sub-two minute performance. And that was just barely, at 1:59.96.

In tonight’s final he remained the only swimmer able to go under two minutes this day, but he stroked to a much faster 1:58.25, a lifetime best by half a second that was good for a two second victory over Typhoon Aquatics’ Chad Barlow (2:00.20).

Barlow led through the 50 (28.33 to DeJong’s 28.49) and 100 (58.43 to 58.44) before DeJong opened up a lead on the third 50 and iced his victory on the final lap.

“This was a milestone for me,” DeJong said, “my first national title.”

Commenting on training with Michael Phelps, he said: “Swimming with Michael has helped raise my swimming to a new level.”

Auburn Aquatics’ Doug Van Wie, expected to challenge DeJong, finished strongly to place third (2:00.91) but was never a factor in the race.

After the race, DeJong announced that he has withdrawn from the World University Games due to concern over terrorist bombings in Turkey, where the Games will be held.

4 AUG 2005
Men 200m Backstroke

WR 1:54.66 PEIRSOL Aaron Montreal (CAN) 29 JUL 2005 USA
AR 1:54.66 PEIRSOL Aaron Montreal (CAN) 29 JUL 2005 USA
US 1:54.74 PEIRSOL Aaron Long Beach (USA) 12 JUL 2004 USA
CR 1:55.15 PEIRSOL Aaron Minneapolis (USA) 20 MAR 2002 USA

A-FINAL:
1.
