IRVINE, Calif., August 4. LANE 4. Rebecca Soni\u2019s been there before at big meets after the prelims. The top seed. But somehow the 18-year-old from Scarlet Aquatics in New Jersey had never gotten to the wall first in finals.<\/p>\n

Until tonight.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s 200-meter breaststroke boasted four Olympians, but for Soni, \u201cit was time for me to win one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time, indeed. The USC-bound Soni led the entire way, splitting 33.66 at the 50, 1:10.72 at the 100, 1:48.34 at the 150 and finishing in 2:26.27. Each of her four 50s was faster than anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Stacianna (Stitts) Winfield was second in 2:29.36 while Soni\u2019s World University Games teammate Megan (Quann) Jendrick, a double gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, was third in 2:29.49, just ahead of 2004 Olympian Tara Kirk, 2:29.83.<\/p>\n
