MONTREAL, Canada, July 31. GRANT Hackett of Australia and Zimbabwe\u2019s Kirsty Coventry were awarded the FINA trophies on Sunday night, signifying their efforts as the finest of the World Championships. Hackett totaled 20 points to distance himself from South Africa\u2019s Roland Schoeman (17) while Coventry posted a point total of 17 points to edge Australia\u2019s Leisel Jones, who had 12 points.<\/p>\n
Hackett won the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle events and took silver in the 200 free. For good measure, he helped Australia to bronze in the 800 free relay. As for Coventry, she was the gold medalist in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and won silver in the 200 and 400 individual medley events.<\/p>\n
In the team standings, the United States ran away with first-place honors, as it had 957 points to 713 for Australia. Japan finished third (489), followed by Germany (392) and Russia (316). The American men won the male competition with 502 points and the American women edged Australia for the female title, 455-447.<\/p>\n
For the final medal standings, the United States won 32 to Australia\u2019s total of 22. The U.S. men accounted for 18 of those medals, including 10 gold. The Australian women also won 10 gold medals and 15 pieces of overall hardware.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
