OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., USA, July 22. LAST week, Megan Jendrick brought an Olympic flavor to the Speedo West Sectionals. This week, the Central Region Sectionals in Oklahoma City feature an Olympic athlete, Caroline Bruce. A member of the United States squad at last summer\u2019s Games in Athens, Bruce was ninth in the 200 breast in her first Olympiad.<\/p>\n
At the Speedo event, Bruce (Wichita Swim Club) got action rolling on Wednesday with a victory in the 200 breast, as she was clocked in 2:31.92. Bruce finished ahead of Parkway\u2019s Liz Smith (2:33.99) and also took second place in the 200 backstroke, trailing only Lori Halvorson (2:20.15). On Thursday, Bruce was second in the 400 I.M. in 4:59.46, finishing behind Parkway\u2019s Julie Stupp (4:55.88).<\/p>\n
In other action at the Central Regional, Jenna Harris was the winner of the women\u2019s 100 free (58.47) and Jenn Kocsis took first in the 200 free with a mark of 2:05.02. Meanwhile, Samantha Woodward won the 100 fly in 1:01.95. On the male side, Parkway\u2019s Matt Beasley won the 100 free (51.98), the 200 free (1:53.00) and 400 I.M. (4:34.00). Seth Johnson took the 200 breast (2:23.01), Thomas Robinson prevailed in the 200 back (2:08.25) and Bobby Bollier was first in the 100 fly (56.52).<\/p>\n
Southern Zone South Sectionals<\/b><\/p>\n
Representing Gator Swim Club, Jamie Reid highlighted the second day of these Sectionals, held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Reid registered a time of 2:16.97 in the 200 back to defeat Megan Romano (2:17.21). Romano was also second in the 100 free, finishing behind Chelsea Nauta (57.33). Shannon Commander (Pine Crest) was triumphant in the 200 breast (2:34.34) and Ashley Carusone was tops in the 200 fly (2:15.59).<\/p>\n
For the men, victories were secured by Kohei Kawamoto in the 100 free (51.23) and Lucas Salatta in the 200 back (2:00.42). Leo Martin added a win in the 200 breast (2:18.48) and Jerram Chudleigh touched the wall ahead of the field in the 200 fly (2:01.47).<\/p>\n
Twin Cities Sectionals<\/b><\/p>\n
Big names were in the water at the event in Minneapolis, as the Northwestern duo of Matt Grevers and Kyle Bubolz went one-two in the 100 freestyle. Grevers clocked 50.92 to edge Bubolz, who stopped the timer in 51.33. Meanwhile, Ashley Wanland delivered a meet record in the 200 breast (2:32.33) and Molly Belk was a record-setter in the 200 fly (2:17.17).<\/p>\n
In the women\u2019s 100 free, Kelly McNichols and Melissa Marik shared first place in a time of 57.44 and Sean Kelly was best in the 200 breast (2:23.95). Doug Kelly secured a triumph in the 200 fly (2:04.24) and Travis Beckerle went 8:25.78 for a win in the men\u2019s 800 free. The women\u2019s 800 free was captured by Valerie Tukey (9:08.31).<\/p>\n
Super Sectionals East<\/b><\/p>\n
Held in St. Mary\u2019s, Md., the Eastern competition started on Thursday with finals in the 1,500 and 800 freestyle events. Whitney Sprague was the victor among the women, thanks to a time of 17:01.54 in the 1,500 distance.
