LOS ANGELES, Calif., USA, July 16. ONE of the few United States World Championship Team members to be competing at the Janet Evans Invitational, Nick Brunelli cooked up a victory Saturday night in the 50-meter freestyle. Racing at the McDonald\u2019s Swim Stadium, Brunelli popped a time of 22.64, which easily held off Simon Burnett (23.15).<\/p>\n
At the U.S. World Champs Trials in April, Brunelli earned a berth on the American squad in the 50 freestyle and currently holds the third-fastest time in the world this year. Along with Jason Lezak, Brunelli is chasing a podium position in the one-lap sprint in Montreal. He can expect major competition from the likes of Duje Draganja, Fred Bousquet and Roland Schoeman.<\/p>\n
While Burnett claimed second in the 50 free, he had no trouble taking top honors in the 200 freestyle, as the British Olympian touched the wall in 1:49.70. That effort was enough to defeat Chris DeJong (1:50.80) and Brian Johns (1:51.09). On Friday night, DeJong cracked the two-minute barrier en route to a triumph in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n
Already the winner of the 400 and 800 freestyle events, Hayley Peirsol branched out to the 400 individual medley on Saturday and came away with her third victory of the meet. Peirsol negotiated the event in 4:48.50, just ahead of the 4:48.67 mark registered by Katie Carroll. On the male side, Tamas Kerekjarto won the 400 I.M. in 4:26.20, faster than the 4:27.09 of Chuck Sayao.<\/p>\n
Other winners on the third night of action included Lauren Medina in the women\u2019s 200 freestyle (2:01.96), Yi Ting Siow in the women\u2019s 200 breaststroke (2:31.72), John Criste in the men\u2019s 200 breast (2:20.08) and Courtney Cashion in the women\u2019s 50 free (25.90).
