AUBURN, Ala., USA, July 16. AT some point in the not-so-distant future, look for Ricky Berens to make some major noise for Team USA. Yes, Berens has the necessary talent to be a key player in the continued growth of American swimming. That much was evident Friday night when the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club youngster posted another victory at the Speedo Southern Sectionals.<\/p>\n

Competing at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center, on the Auburn University campus, Berens clocked 1:50.92 in the 200-meter freestyle, holding off South Africa\u2019s Ryk Neethling (1:51.03) at the wall. Neethling was a member of South Africa\u2019s gold-medal winning and world-record setting 400 free relay at last summer\u2019s Athens Olympics. Doug Van Wie (1:52.29) and Matt Owen (1:52.33) finished behind Berens and Neethling. Berens won the 200 butterfly on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s 200 free, Elizabeth Hill edged Lindsey Ertter. Hill covered the four-lap event in 2:02.74 while Ertter touched the wall in 2:03.44. As for the 100 backstroke, victories were claimed by Margo McCawley for the women (1:04.18) and James Wike for the men (56.31). Elaine Breeden (4:53.46) and Eric Shanteau (4:27.58) added wins in the 400 individual medley.<\/p>\n
