AUBURN, Ala., USA, July 15. THERE was a combination of experience and youth on the medal podium during the first day of action at the Speedo Southern Sectionals, held at Auburn University\u2019s James E. Martin Aquatics Center. If a well-established veteran wasn\u2019t the first-place finisher, chances are an up-and-coming star was first to the wall.<\/p>\n

Preparing for the World Championships in Montreal, set to begin next weekend, Fred Bousquet zoomed to victory in the 50-meter freestyle, thanks to a mark of 23.12. The short-course world-record holder in the event, the Frenchman is hoping to land a medal during his trip to Canada, whether it be in the 50 free or 100 free. Bousquet was complemented on the female side by Jana Kolukanova, who blazed 25.45. That swim handed Kolukanova a half-second triumph over Stephanie Napier (25.98), the reigning scholastic champ in Tennessee.<\/p>\n

In the 200 butterfly events, Elaine Breeden and Ricky Berens turned in first-place finishes for the youth movement. A 16-year-old from Wildcat Aquatics, Breeden cruised 2:11.65 in the women\u2019s race, quick enough to repel Elizabeth Hill of the Athens Bulldogs (2:12.72). Meanwhile, Ricky Berens was the male victor in a mark of 2:02.85. His Mecklenburg Aquatic teammates, Matt Patton and Sean Patton, swept the top spots in the 800 freestyle. The younger Patton won in 8:14.65, with his sibling checking in at 8:17.82. Brooks Stovall, of the Memphis Thunder, secured third place in 8:18.81.<\/p>\n

The 200 individual medley featured victories from Tricia Harm (Athens Bulldogs) and Eric Shanteau. Harm stopped the clock in 2:20.35 while Shanteau registered a time of 2:03.34, quicker than the second-place performance of James Wike (2:05.73). Anna Miller also earned a Day One triumph, as she covered the women\u2019s 800 free in 8:56.99.<\/p>\n
