NETANYA, Israel, July 12. DAY two of the swimming competition at the 17th Maccabiah Games, being held at the Wingate Institute near Netanya, was a virtual replay of Day One, with Israelis winning five of the eight events up for grabs and the USA three. Once again, four Maccabiah Games records were set (and one tied) and, for the second straight day, the outstanding performance was turned in by 16 year-old Daniel Madwed.<\/p>\n
Madwed, who set a Games mark yesterday with his 1:58.15 in the 200-meter butterfly, took the 100 fly today in 54.51 seconds. He was pushed all the way by Israelis Erez Feren and Nadav Kochavi, who tied for silver at 55.56. <\/p>\n
The men's 200 free was the most exciting event on today's card as Israel's Shai Livnat, a student at Auburn University, clocked a Games record 1:50.39, holding off determined challenges by Americans Scott Goldblatt (1:50.77), Bryan Goldberg (1:50.93) and Max Jaben(1:51.56).<\/p>\n
Goldblatt, a two-time U.S. Olympian who has won Olympic gold and silver medals, was the U.S. flagbearer at the Opening Ceremonies.<\/p>\n
The Israeli women upset the USA by taking the 400 free relay in a Games record 3:58.62, with the U.S. two strokes back in 4:00.26. The USA's Payton Johnson breezed to another Games record in the 100 fly in 1:02.45, three seconds ahead of her Israeli challengers.<\/p>\n
Israel's Maya Finkler accounted for the final record of the day when she won the 200 free by four seconds in 2:04.84, tying the Games mark.<\/p>\n
In other events:<\/p>\n
Israel's Inbal Levavi, a University of Maryland standout, took the 400 I.M. in 5:04.26, almost six full seconds ahead of the USA's Rebecca Smock.<\/p>\n
The men's 400 I.M. saw former University of Texas swimmer Miki Halika touch in 4:28.19, a second ahead of teammate Shilo Ayalon, a Georgia Tech grad and the USA's Meir Hasbani, who swims for Princeton.<\/p>\n
Unlike the American women, Uncle Sam's men had no trouble in sweeping to victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:27.24.<\/p>\n
