ATHENS, Georgia, USA, June 30. AFTER one year, Amanda Weir\u2019s days at the University of Georgia are over. According to an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution<\/i>, Weir has informed Bulldogs coach Jack Bauerle of her intent to transfer. Weir is expected to take her talents to either Southern California, Stanford, California or Arizona.<\/p>\n
A double-silver medalist in relay action at the Athens Olympics, Weir has been released from her scholarship by Georgia, a school she helped to the 2005 NCAA championship. Weir was the hammer on a quartet of Georgia relays that took top honors at the NCAA Champs. She also finished second in the 200 free, third in the 50 free and won the consolation final in the 100 free.<\/p>\n
"I wouldn't trade my year at Georgia for anything," Weir said in the newspaper article. "We accomplished so much with a great group of girls. But my heart was never really there. I just think I can be happier somewhere else. Maybe it had something to do with going from the Olympics straight into a big college environment, without any break. The whole year was a struggle."<\/p>\n
Weir is currently preparing for next month\u2019s World Championships in Montreal, where she will contest the 50 and 100 freestyle events and will play a significant role in the United States\u2019 relay efforts. <\/p>\n
"It wasn't like I sprung it on the coaches or anything," Weir said of her decision to transfer. "They knew I was thinking about leaving. (Bauerle) tried his best to talk me into staying, but in the end, he knew it wasn't for me."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
