ALMERIA, Spain, June 27. COMPETING on the fourth day of swimming action at the Mediterranean Games in Spain, Fred Bousquet secured his first championship of the meet, as he won the 50-meter butterfly in 24.30. Bousquet, of course, made major headlines in March at the NCAA Championships. It was in Minneapolis where Bousquet (18.74) became the first man in history to break the 19-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
A Frenchman and Auburn University product, Bousquet is hoping for a medal showing at next month\u2019s World Championships in Montreal. While he appears solid in the sprint fly, Bousquet has some work remaining in the freestyle department. In earlier action at the Mediterranean Games, Bousquet managed only sixth place in the 50 and 100 free distances.<\/p>\n
Aside from Bousquet, French victories were claimed by Solenne Figues and Alexandra Putra. Figues, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 freestyle, won that event with a mark of 1:59.49, just ahead of the 1:59.61 showing of Slovenia\u2019s Sara Isakovic. As for Putra, she collected a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.33. Adding to France\u2019s strong day was Sebastien Rouault, who won the 1,500 freestyle in 15:08.98.<\/p>\n
Other triumphs went to Italy\u2019s David Berbotto in the 200 freestyle (1:50.00) and Elena Gemo in the 50 butterfly (27.55). Greece\u2019s Aristeidis Grigoriadis was the winner of the men\u2019s 100 back in 55.75.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
