VANCOUVER, Canada, June 20. BRENT Hayden couldn\u2019t have scripted a better weekend than the one he just enjoyed at the Mel Zajac International Swim Meet. Completing three days of superb swimming, Hayden set a meet record in the 100 freestyle on Sunday. More important, he appears ready for next month\u2019s World Championships in Montreal.<\/p>\n
Becoming the first man in meet history to dip under the 50-second barrier, Hayden won the 100 free in 49.96 to claim an easy triumph over Rick Say (51.43). The meet standard was Hayden\u2019s third of the three-day affair, as he also picked up victories and records in the 50 and 200 freestyle events. Last summer, Hayden was a member of the Canadian Olympic Team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t have very big expectations going into this meet,\u201d said Hayden, a 21-year-old. \u201cI had a really bad week of training, just swimming slow. So being able to come up and post all these times is really reassuring. And meet records are a real bonus on top of that.\u201d <\/p>\n
While Hayden wrapped up a trifecta, Brittany Reimer accomplished the same feat on the women\u2019s side. Already the winner of the 400 and 1,500 freestyles, Reimer took first place in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:49.03. Meanwhile, Sophie Simard complemented her triumph in the 200 free with a win in the 100 free (56.81).<\/p>\n
Morgan Knabe, who has had a sensational career for Canada in the breaststroke events, won the 50-meter sprint in his specialty, as he was clocked in 28.89. For the women, the 50 breast crown went to Laura Graham (33.07). In the 200 butterfly, first-place finishes were notched by Audrey Lacroix (2:12.39) and Jerram Chudleigh (2:04.42).<\/p>\n
Other victories went to Erin Gammel in the women\u2019s 100 backstroke (1:03.63), Riley Janes in the men\u2019s 100 back (57.62) and Jan Wolfgarten in the men\u2019s 1,500 freestyle (15:31.31).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
