VANCOUVER, Canada, June 18. THREE records were wiped out Friday night as the Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet got going in Canada. Leading the record barrage was Brent Hayden, a member of the Canadian Olympic squad and semifinalist in Athens last summer in the 200 freestyle.<\/p>\n
Renewing his rivalry with countryman Rick Say, Hayden notched a meet record for the 200 free, as he touched the wall in 1:49.36, ahead of the 1:50.35 mark registered by Say. Both men are contenders to advance to the final of the event at next month\u2019s World Championships in Montreal. Last summer, Say placed sixth at the Athens Games.<\/p>\n
Jan Wolfgarten and Brittany Reimer also established meet records, accomplishing the feats in distance-freestyle events. Wolfgarten won the men\u2019s 800 free in 8:10.70 while Reimer earned her competition record in 16:39.48 for the 1,500 free. Meanwhile, Ariana Kukors (King Aquatics) was a double-event victor, as she took top honors in the 200 backstroke (2:17.01) and the 400 individual medley (4:47.06). Bradley Ally took the men\u2019s 400 I.M. in 4:24.92.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s 100 breaststroke, Morgan Knabe and Mike Brown stopped the clock in identical times, as each completed the two-lap race in 1:03.71. Other triumphs were secured by Sophie Simard in the 200 free (2:01.70), Mike Mintenko in the 50 butterfly (24.86), Desmond Strelzow in the 200 backstroke (2:03.17) and Kathleen Stoody in the 100 breast (1:12.08).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
