THE first night of the TYR Meet of Champions featured a strong start by the Japanese National Team, as Takeshi Matsuda and Ai Shibata registered victories in the 800-meter freestyle on Thursday. Both swimmers are bound for Montreal next month for the World Championships, and are using this meet as a final stage of preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Matsuda covered his 800 meters in 8:01.15 and easily outdistanced Justin Mortimer, who stopped the clock in 8:14.43. Chad LaTourette finished third in 8:19.39. On the women\u2019s side, Shibata checked in with a meet-record performance of 8:29.72, a mark that lowered the competition standard of Sachiko Yamada, set in 2000 at 8:32.93.<\/p>\n<p>Yurie Yano gave Japan a sweep of the top two slots as she placed second in 8:41.39, just ahead of the United States\u2019 Hayley Peirsol (8:42.04). Yumi Kida notched fourth in 8:42.30.
