MONTE CARLO, Monaco, June 15. DURING the first three stops on the Mare Nostrum Series, some pretty good times came out of Europe. Maybe, then, it was only a matter of time before the clocked slowed down. On the whole, that day arrived Tuesday in Monaco.<\/p>\n
Martina Moravcova and Mark Warnecke turned in the best performances on the day, as Moravcova took top honors in the 100 butterfly. The Slovakian Olympian touched the wall in 58.76, enough to hold off the United States\u2019 Mary DeScenza (59.32). As for Warnecke, the 35-year-old German bested the competition in the 50 breaststroke, going a solid 27.67.<\/p>\n
As has been the case for the majority of the Mare Nostrum Series, a number of Russian athletes were victorious, including Dimitri Komornikov in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.84). Meanwhile, Arkady Vyatchanin prevailed in the 100 backstroke (55.13) and Andrey Kapralov was the winner of the 100 freestyle (49.95). Nikolai Skvortsov added a decision in the 200 butterfly (1:57.02).<\/p>\n
In the 50 freestyle, the Netherlands\u2019 Marleen Veldhuis (25.38) won the women\u2019s event and Spain\u2019s Eduard Lorente (22.67) came out on top on the male side. Other triumphs were secured by Denmark\u2019s Louise Ornstedt in the 200 backstroke (2:11.51), Costa Rica\u2019s Claudia Poll in the 200 freestyle (1:59.32) and Austria\u2019s Mirna Jukic in the 100 breast (1:10.41).
