ROME, June 12. COMPETING on home turf, the Italian contingent produced some strong results during the third stop on the Mare Nostrum Series, held in Rome on Saturday and Sunday. Male and female, the Italians were all over the medal podium, a development they\u2019d love to see at the World Championships in Montreal next month.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the action was Filippo Magnini, a medal threat at the World Champs and an Olympic finalist last summer in Athens. Magnini popped a mark of 49.62 in the 100 freestyle, an event in which he finished fifth at the Olympics, and also prevailed in the 200 free, going 1:49.13. Magnini was followed in the four-lap affair by countryman Massi Rosolino (1:49.35).<\/p>\n
While Magnini is a medal hopeful in the 100 free, Federica Pellegrini may be the favorite for gold in the women\u2019s 200 free. Already the owner of the top time in the world this year, Pellegrini won her prime event in 1:58.51, as she edged out Poland\u2019s Otylia Jedrzejczak (1:59.43) and Costa Rica\u2019s Claudia Poll (1:59.66). Jedrzejczak captured first in the 200 butterfly, going 2:08.93.<\/p>\n
Chiara Boggiatto and Christina Chiuso also earned a first-place finishes for Italy. Boggiatto bested the field in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 1:09.71, and Chiuso was the winner of the 50 freestyle (25.60). Meanwhile, Paolo Bossini was second in the men\u2019s 200 breast, placing behind Dimitri Komornikov. The Russian prevailed in 2:13.10 and also claimed victory in the 100 breast (1:02.21).<\/p>\n
Hungary\u2019s Laszlo Cseh swept the individual medley events for the third time during the Mare Nostrum Series. The 19-year-old went 1:59.81 in the 200 distance and toppled the opposition in the 400 distance, going 4:13.06. On the female side, Slovenia\u2019s Anja Klinar also turned the double, checking in at 2:17.87 and 4:47.70. Another double winner was Romania\u2019s Camelia Potec, who prevailed in the 400 free (4:09.87) and the 800 free (8:38.91).<\/p>\n
Mary DeScenza, qualified for Montreal in three individual events, was the only American winner during the meet, thanks to a triumph in the 100 butterfly (59.24). The win for the men went to the Ukraine\u2019s Andriy Serdinov in 52.59. Another Ukrainian victory was collected by Oleksandr Volynets in the 50 free (22.52).<\/p>\n
First-place showings also went to Russia\u2019s Stanislava Komarova in the women\u2019s 200 back (2:12.66), Nikolay Skvortsov in the men\u2019s 200 fly (1:56.59) and Arkady Vyatchanin in the men\u2019s 100 back (55.21). Other victories were secured by Poland\u2019s Przemyslaw Stanczyk in the men\u2019s 400 free (3:51.01), Austria\u2019s Mirna Jukic in the women\u2019s 200 breast (2:27.28), Finland\u2019s Hanna-Maria Seppala in the women\u2019s 100 free (55.23) and Denmark\u2019s Louise Ornstedt in the 100 back (1:01.14).
