INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 12. THE second night of the FINIS Counsilman Classic was the Michael and Matt Show, as in Phelps and Grevers. The pair combined for a quartet of victories in the Saturday competition held at the Indiana University Natatorium.<\/p>\n
One night after setting meet records in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, Michael Phelps won two more events and slashed another meet record. En route to winning the 200 butterfly in 1:56.28, Phelps broke Tom Malchow\u2019s meet standard of 1:57.16. Phelps later added a first-place effort in the 400 freestyle, where he was timed in 3:51.92.<\/p>\n
Although he is the two-time defending world champion in the 200 butterfly, Phelps will not swim the event at next month\u2019s World Championships in Montreal. He will, however, contest the 400 freestyle and is expected to battle Grant Hackett, the Australian distance king.<\/p>\n
As for Grevers, the Northwestern University standout doubled up in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Grevers opened with a 23.04 effort in the 50 free and closed his night with a swim of 55.32 in the dorsal discipline. Chris DeJong was second in 55.47.<\/p>\n
For the women, Natalie Coughlin established a meet record in the 100 backstroke, as she hit the wall in a solid 1:01.12. Coughlin was complemented as a female victor by Rachel Komisarz, who topped the field in the 400 freestyle with a performance of 4:14.79. Komisarz won the 100 butterfly on the first night of action while Coughlin took first in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
Other athletes picking up wins were Elaine Breeden in the women\u2019s 200 butterfly (2:13.45), Lindsey Smith in the women\u2019s 50 free (26.49), Alisa Finn in the women\u2019s 200 breast (2:34.28) and Giordan Pogioli in the men\u2019s 200 breast (2:19.30).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
