INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 8. TWO days and counting until some of the elite names in United States swimming converge on the Indiana University Natatorium for the FINIS Counsilman Classic, the only USA Swimming Grand Prix event held outside of California. <\/p>\n
In its second edition, the FINIS Counsilman Classic is named in honor of Doc Counsilman, the former coach at Indiana University who is revered as one of the greatest minds the sport has ever known. The meet will run from Friday through Sunday and will serve as preparation for this summer\u2019s World Championships in Montreal.<\/p>\n
Headlining the event are multi-Olympic medalists Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. Phelps, who won eight medals in Athens, leads the Club Wolverine contingent attending the competition. As for Coughlin, who won five medals at last summer\u2019s Olympics, she tops the list of Cal-Berkeley swimmers who will attend.<\/p>\n
Aside from Phelps, Club Wolverine will be represented by Olympians Klete Keller and Peter Vanderkaay, members of the United States\u2019 gold-medal winning 800 freestyle relay from Athens. Matt Grevers, heading into his junior year at Northwestern, will also compete. For the women, Coughlin will be complemented by Diana Munz of the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and Rachel Komisarz, an Olympian in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n
