NEW YORK, June 7. THE odds of the Olympic Games returning to the United States in 2012 went from positive to negative in the last few days, as a New York state board rejected funding for a proposed stadium in Manhattan. The proposed stadium was to play a critical role in New York\u2019s attempt to lure the Games to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n
According to The Associated Press<\/i>, Paris received significant praise in a report by the International Olympic Committee that evaluated the five finalists for 2012. Paris has long been regarded as a leading contender, with New York not far behind. But, New York received mix reviews in the IOC evaluation, particularly over the stadium issue. The state board rejected necessary public funding for the $2 billion stadium. The Summer Games have not been in the U.S. since Atlanta in 1996.<\/p>\n
London and Madrid received strong reviews in the IOC report, but both cities are unlikely to be awarded the Olympics. The final city, Moscow, lacked detail in its proposal to host and has been considered a longshot challenger.
