CORAL GABLES, Fla., June 1. MATT Gribble, a two-time Olympian and former standout at the University of Miami, will have a street corner named in his honor on Thursday. Katy Sorenson, Miami-Dade County\u2019s Commissioner, will make the announcement at 10 a.m. at the southwest corner of 117th Ave. and 128th Street.<\/p>\n
Gribble died in a car accident in March of 2004 and will be represented by family and friends at the ceremony. He was 41 at the time of his death. Gribble still holds the Miami record in the 100 butterfly, an event in which he flourished on the international stage.<\/p>\n
Of course, with Miami axing its men's swimming program, Gribble's school record will last for eternity. Then again, the school could always bring the sport back.<\/p>\n
A member of the United States Olympic Team that boycotted the 1980 Games in Moscow, Gribble competed at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. A two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American, Gribble won the 1982 world championship in the 100-meter fly and held the world record until 1984.
