GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 27. DANA Vollmer, one of the top recruits in the country and a member of the United States\u2019 world-record setting 800 freestyle relay at the Athens Olympics, has decided to take her talents to the University of Florida.<\/p>\n
Vollmer, who graduated from Granbury High in Texas earlier this week, provided her commitment to coach Gregg Troy. Vollmer is Florida\u2019s top female recruit since Dara Torres attended the school in the 1980s. Vollmer also considered Stanford, California-Berkeley and the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n
Last summer, Vollmer competed in Athens in the 200 freestyle and in the 800 free relay. After finishing sixth in the 200 free, she joined Natalie Coughlin, Carly Piper and Kaitlin Sandeno on the relay. The quartet was timed in 7:53.42, which wiped out the last drug-tainted world record of the East Germans. Vollmer is also a world-class performer in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n
