BOSTON, Mass., May 26. FOR the past eight years, Bill Smyth has been a major influence with the University of Virginia program, serving as an assistant to Mark Bernardino. Now, Smyth will get a chance to run his own show.<\/p>\n
Smyth was named the men\u2019s and women\u2019s coach at Boston University on Wednesday. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Smyth will assume his new duties on July 1. As an assistant at Virginia, Smyth has helped the men\u2019s program capture seven consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference championships.<\/p>\n
"It will be an honor to be working at Boston University,\u201d Smyth said. \u201cThe people I met during the interview process were the deciding factor. With the new pool at the Fitness and Recreation Center, Boston University and the athletic department have taken a major step in their commitment to excellence, not just in the America East Conference but on the national level as well."<\/p>\n
As an athlete at Virginia, Smyth was a five-time All-American and won six individual titles at the ACC Championships. He advanced to the finals of the 400 I.M. at the 1992 Olympic Trials and placed fifth.<\/p>\n

"He is one of the premier distance coaches in America and has been widely regarded in collegiate swimming circles as one of the top assistant coaches in Division I swimming.
