PHILADEPHIA, Penn., May 26. WHEN the swimming competition is held at the Maccabiah Games in Israel in July, there will be an Olympic flavor to the United States squad, thanks to the presence of Scott Goldblatt and Lenny Krayzelburg.<\/p>\n
Both men were members of the 2000 and 2004 Olympic squads and boast six Olympic medals between them. Krayzelburg was recently named the Honorary Captain of the United States contingent that will attend the Games. Seth Baron, the former head coach at Georgia Tech, will guide the U.S. Team.<\/p>\n
A product of the University of Texas, Goldblatt has enjoyed a sensational career. In 2000, he picked up a silver medal in the 800 freestyle relay. Four years later, while competing at the Athens Games, Goldblatt earned gold in the 800 free relay, as he handled a leg during the morning preliminaries of the event.<\/p>\n
Ranked eighth in the 200 freestyle during the 2003 season, Goldblatt has also competed in three World Championship competitions, including a pair in the long-course format. He was a silver medalist in the 800 free relay at the 2003 World Champs and took bronze in the 800 free relay in the 2001 meet. Last October, he won gold in the 800 free relay at the Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n
Krayzelburg, of course, is one of the greatest backstrokers in history. After winning gold in the 100 and 200 backs and the 400 medley relay during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Krayzelburg earned gold in Athens after swimming the prelims of the medley relay. The 1998 world champ in both dorsal events, Krayzelburg formerly held global standards in each discipline.<\/p>\n
Other notable names on the U.S. squad are Daniel Madwed and Dan Velez. Madwed won three medals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in January and was third in the 200 butterfly at the World Championship Trials. As for Velez, the North Carolina State standout will handle breaststroke duties at the Maccabiah Games.<\/p>\n
