MONTREAL, May 12. AFTER an uneventful opening night of the Canadian World Championship Trials, the second evening of action got a little bit better, due to a national-record performance in the 100-meter backstroke by Erin Gammel.<\/p>\n
En route to victory, Gammel touched the wall in 1:01.93 and broke her own national record, which had stood at 1:02.03 since 2003. That time, however, is more than two seconds off Natalie Coughlin\u2019s world record of 59.58. Kelly Stefanyshyn was second to Gammel in 1:02.94.<\/p>\n
The highlight on the men\u2019s side was the 200 freestyle duel between Brent Hayden and Rick Say. The Trials victory went to Hayden in 1:48.17, but Say wasn\u2019t far behind, as he clocked 1:48.35. Both athletes earned invitations to the World Champs, which will be held in Montreal in late July. Colin Russell finished third in 1:50.25.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s 50 breaststroke, Matthew Huang reached the wall faster than the competition, touching in 28.45. Scott Dickens, who was second in the 100 breast, also took second in the one-lap event, registering a time of 28.53. Morgan Knabe, the national-record holder, was third in 28.77.<\/p>\n
One night after winning the 400 freestyle, Brittany Reimer added her second title when she took home first place in the 1,500 freestyle. Reimer took command of the race from the start and finished in 16:27.75, quicker than the second-place swim of Tanya Hunks, who went 16:36.60 and qualified for the World Champs.<\/p>\n
Other victories were earned by Matt Rose in the men\u2019s 100 backstroke (56.54), Christin Petelski in the women\u2019s 100 breaststroke (1:10.34) and Chad Murray in the men\u2019s 200 butterfly (2:01.25).
