AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, April 22. THE Dutch Nationals kicked off on Thursday and in the absence of several Olympians, many new swimmers surface. Several nice times appeared on the clock the first two days in the shortest distances, but Dutch swimmers seem to have abandoned the 200 distances and above.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s 50 freestyle had a great final, with short course world champion Marleen Veldhuis winning in 25.01, ahead of Inge Dekker (25.27) and Chantal Groot (25.32), all within the qualifying time for the World Championships in Montreal. Where the country has plenty of good sprinters, the 400 meter swimmers are rare. Only Linda Bank will make the world\u2019s top 100 this year with her 4:19.99.<\/p>\n

The heats of the 100 backstroke ended in disaster for Rieneke Schinkel and Hinkelien Schreuder, the top qualifier and the third seed, after being disqualified for having their toes above the surface of the water during their last attempt to qualify for Montreal.<\/p>\n

They were permitted to swim in a time trial, where Schreuder set a personal best of 1:02.95, which should be enough to qualify for the backstroke spot in the medley relay. It could potentially be a fantastic relay, with anchor Marleen Veldhuis on the freestyle and the winner of the 100 butterfly, Inge Dekker (58.89), swimming the third leg. The problem is there\u2019s no breaststroker yet. <\/p>\n

In the longer events, Rieneke Schinkel did sharpen her pool record in the 200 backstroke to 2:15.82, but she was well off the national record of Jolanda de Rover (2:12.38), the Olympic Champion in 1984.<\/p>\n

Thijs van Valkengoed swam a seasonal best in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.93), but that\u2019s not enough for the winner of the 2003 U.S. Open to go to the World Champs. Also, Stefan Aartsen fell short in the 100 butterfly (54.18). Robin van Aggele set his personal best in the 400 IM to 4:20 three weeks ago at the Spanish Open in Cadiz, but instead of gaining two seconds and qualifying in 4:18, he ended up swimming 4:22.36.<\/p>\n

So far, only Pieter van den Hoogenband, Marleen Veldhuis and Inge Dekker have qualified for an individual trip to Montreal. Chantal Groot also swam two cuts, but in both the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly, Veldhuis and Dekker are faster. Two relays expand the Dutch team with several members, but could that be it? There are two days left for the country that placed fourth in the overall medal standings in swimming in Athens to improve its results.<\/p>\n
