NEW HAVEN, Conn., April 21. YALE University\u2019s swimming and diving programs \u2013 male and female \u2013 earned perfect scores of 1,000 for its Academic Progress Rate (APR), according to data released by the NCAA. Out of 342 Division I schools, Yale was one of only 21 institutions to earn a pair of perfect marks.<\/p>\n
On the men\u2019s side, 30 schools received a score of 1,000 while 33 schools accomplished the feat on the women\u2019s side. The APR is a numerical representation of whether a school\u2019s athletes remain in school and maintain academic eligibility through graduation. The University of Pennsylvania was the other Ivy League school to earn a pair of perfect scores.<\/p>\n
Designed to hold collegiate athletics to a higher academic standard, the APR will be used by the NCAA to ensure academics are not overlooked. The benchmark score is 925, which reflects a graduation rate of 50%. More than 10% of the schools had at least one program not reach the benchmark. The average male score was 967 while the average female score was 975.<\/p>\n
Beginning in the fall, teams that fall below the benchmark will not be able to replace scholarship athletes who leave the school while academically ineligible. Beginning in 2008, teams that continually fall below the benchmark will face postseason bans.
