STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 11. EMMA Igelstrom, who made her mark as Sweden\u2019s premier breaststroker, has retired from the sport. The 25-year-old, who has battled bulimia and took a lengthy break last year to confront her disorder, cited a lack of motivation for her decision.<\/p>\n
Igelstrom announced her retirement to SVT, a Swedish public-television station. She indicated that she will begin studies to become a doctor. Igelstrom did not compete at last summer\u2019s Olympic Games, due to the attention she spent coping with her medical travails.<\/p>\n
During her career, Igelstrom collected 25 national and 17 international championships and set six world records in short-course competition. Igelstrom was best known for her sprinting ability in the 50-meter distance, where she won numerous European and World Championship crowns. In 2002, Igelstrom claimed gold in the 50 and 100 breast and silver in the 200 breast at the World Short Course Champs.
