INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 3. THE outcome of this race was predictable, what with the way she's been swimming the last few days. Still, Katie Hoff continues to amaze.<\/p>\n

Already the winner of the 200 individual medley (American record) and the 200 freestyle, Hoff blasted her opposition in the 400 individual medley, as she clocked 4:39.25, more than two seconds quicker than the 4:41.87 of Kaitlin Sandeno, the Olympic silver medalist in the event.<\/p>\n

Hoff wasted little time taking command, as she turned in first after the butterfly leg. The 15-year-old from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club padded her lead on the backstroke and, after the breaststroke, appeared as if she might challenge Sandeno's American standard (4:34.95).<\/p>\n

While Hoff tired in the last 100 meters, she still managed to post the fastest time in the world this year. While she has three victories under her belt, Hoff still has the 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle ahead – provided she doesn't scratch one of the events.<\/p>\n

"My goal coming into the meet was just to make the team in the 200 and 400 I.M.," Hoff said. "To make it in the 200 free is just amazing. I think the 400 I.M. was weighing me down all weekend, and now that I'm done with that, all the pressure is kind of off of me right now." <\/p>\n

Sandeno, who picked up a relay spot out of the 200 free but failed to qualify in the 200 I.M., held off Alicia Aemisegger for second. Sandeno held a nearly three-second edge on Aemisegger at the midpoint, but Aemisegger pulled to within a second after the breaststroke leg. At the wall, Sandeno prevailed by just .45.<\/p>\n

Sandeno touched the wall in 4:41.87 and Aemisegger registered a time of 4:42.32. Kristen Caverly placed fourth in 4:44.97 while Ariana Kukors was fifth in 4:46.78.<\/p>\n
