In all but one event the top two finishers were the top two qualifiers.  The only exception was Kaitlin Sandeno, the American record holder, moving up from fourth to second in the 400 Individual Medley.<\/p>\n<p>The Men&#39;s 100 fly lived up to its billing with Phelps and Crocker doing a repeat of their Athens dance, albeit 0.1 slower.  The media has stories to write.<\/p>\n<p>The US has won this race in the Olympics five of the nine times we have competed in it: Doug Russell (1968), Mark Spitz (1972), Matt Vogel (1976), Pablo Morales (1992) and Michael Phelps (2004).  The thing that is disconcerting now is that no other athletes have recently gotten up and raced with Michael and Ian, leaving the USA in the sorry position of having the top two swimmers\/times in history but NO OTHER ATHLETES IN THE ALL-TIME TOP 25.  The USA always prides itself on its depth.
