DIANA Munz and Kalyn Keller were not here.  Brooke Bennett was retired.  Kaitlin Sandeno had swum a disappointing 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p>All the ingredients were in place for the New Kid to emerge and take command of the 400 free, maybe even challenge Janet Evans&#39; mythic 4:03.85. The New Kid mentioned most often was 16 year-old Katie Ziegler, who has been tearing up the short course circuit of late with one brilliant performance after another.<\/p>\n<p>But if everything were predictable, no one would bother to conduct the Trials.  There are always upsets just waiting to seize center stage.  And that\u2019s what happened tonight.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, Ziegler took the lead immediately and turned at 100 meters first.  But her 1:00.13 was only a stroke or so ahead of the tightly-bunched field,  the race was much closer than anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>At 200 meters, 22 year-old University of Wisconsin senior Carly Piper caught the youngster as both turned in 2:05.19.  Veteran Emily Mason was right at their shoulders in 2:05.32 with three other women within a second of the pace-setters.<\/p>\n<p>At the three-quarter mark, Piper had put almost half a second  between herself and Ziegler, with 15 year-old upstart Kelsey Ditto moving from fifth to third, only two-tenths behind Ziegler.<\/p>\n<p>Ditto had the fastest final 100, as she moved solidly into second behind Piper, the winners touching in 4:11.05 and 4:11.62.
