THIS time it was much harder for the Georgia Bulldogs to win a championship final.

The Bulldogs and five other teams were in contention to take the 400-yard medley relay title. Early on, it looked as if Auburn might win the race on the shoulders of Kirsty Coventry, who opened the contest by plunking down a 52.32 backstroke split that had the Tigers leading the rest of the field by nearly a second.

Unfortunately for the Tigers there are four legs to a relay, and Georgia gradually fought its was back after being in fifth place following the first leg of the race.

Amanda Weir, the Bulldogs' anchor swimmer, jumped into the water in a virtual four-way tie for first place. However her freestyle split of 48.19 was enough to hold off second place Florida, as the Bulldogs finished with a time of 3:33.89 and a pool record. The Stanford Cardinal finished in third place ahead of the Tigers.

Texas finished in fifth place, narrowly edging out Arizona by .17 seconds.
Penn State and California finished in seventh and eighth.

After the first day of the championships, Georgia made a statement by winning three of the first six events of the 2005 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. They hold a commanding lead over Auburn, 211-137, while Arizona is in third place with 120 points. Stanford was the only other school to finish with more than 100 points, notching 108. Florida rounds out the top five team scores, with 96 points.

FINALS RESULTS
EVENT: 6 WOMEN's 400 Yard MEDLEY RELAY

NCAA Record: 3:31.45 AUBURN 2003
AMERICAN Record: 3:31.74 STANFORD 2002
US OPEN Record: 3:31.45 AUBURN 2003
POOL RECORD: 3:36.39 PENN STATE 2003
QUALIFYING FOR "A" CUT: 3:38.32

RESULTS of FINALS

RANK TEAM PRELIM TIME

                               CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

  1) GEORGIA 3:36.41 3:33.89**
1) ARSENAULT, SAMANTHA SR :54.01 3) DESCENZA, MARY JR :51.40
2) POEWE, SARAH JR 1:00.29 4) WEIR, AMANDA FR :48.19
** POOL RECORD:
2) FLORIDA 3:34.87 3:34.73
1) FARRELL, MAUREEN SR :53.64 3) WEIMAN, CANDACE SO :52.36
2) BERNHARDT, VIPA JR 1:00.30 4) BURCKLE, CAROLINE FR :48.43

  3) STANFORD 3:36.65 3:34.82
1) BISHOP, BROOKE FR :54.35 3) KIRK, DANA JR :52.53
2) BRUCE, CAROLINE FR :59.51 4) BOUTWELL, LACEY SR :48.43

  4) AUBURN 3:38.25 3:35.30
1) COVENTRY, KIRSTY SR :52.32 3) HOELZER, MARGARET SR :52.53
2) DENBY, KARA FR 1:02.00 4) KUKORS, EMILY FR :48.45

  5) TEXAS 3:37.97 3:35.62
1) McGREGORY, HAYLEY FR :53.55 3) WANEZEK, SARAH SR :52.56
2) TINNON, ELIZABETH SO :59.81 4) SIMINSKI, KRISTY JR :49.70

  6) ARIZONA 3:37.82 3:35.79
1) SMITH, MARSHI JR :53.25 3) MYERS, WHITNEY SO :52.62
2) SIEPER, ERIN JR 1:01.75 4) NYMEYER, LACEY FR :48.17

  7) PENN.
