HAVING all but locked up the team championship, the Drury men are going for style points at the Division II Championships in Orlando.

Boasting a three-day total of 555 points, Drury heads into Saturday’s final day of action with a commanding lead over Cal State-Bakersfield (379) and North Dakota (369.5). Part of that margin is due to the exploits of Artem Sloudnov and Jakub Jiracek.

Sloudnov roared to a Division II record in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 54.99. He was tailed closely by Jiracek, who hit the wall in 55.12. Ben Labowitch added a sixth-place performance for Drury.

The 800 free relay also powered Drury, which edged Cal State-Bakersfield. The foursome of Ryan Norrie, Michael Lewandowski, Jiracek and Henrik Weible went 6:38.11 for the triumph.

On the women’s side, defending champion Truman State has a 31-point lead over Drury. Truman enters the final day with 401 points while Drury has 376 points. UC San Diego is in third with 300 points.

While Drury’s men received a significant boost in the breast and from its 800 free relay, its lead was reliant on several other efforts. In the 500 freestyle, won by North Dakota’s Rodrigo Cintra, Drury watched Weible and Norrie finish second and third.

Drury also picked up a second-place swim from Alexis Perdomo in the 100 backstroke, which was won by North Dakota’s Rodrigo Ferreira. Perdomo was also second in the 200 butterfly, where first-place honors went to Kurt Boehm of UC San Diego.

For the ladies, Diana Betsworth (500 free), Whitney Wodstrchil (100 back) and Michele Osborn (100 breast) had second-place outings for Truman, which claimed first in the 800 free relay. Sarah Dance, Whitney Jensen, Molly Polette and Betsworth finished in 7:24.73.

One night after setting a national record in the 400 individual medley, West Chester’s Tammy Leane collected gold in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.59. Meanwhile, UC San Diego’s Rosanna Delurgio reaffirmed her breaststroke dominance with a win in the 100 discipline (1:02.17).

Other women’s champions included Tampa’s Chelsea Hastings in the 100 backstroke (55.96) and West Virginia Wesleyan’s Monica Morin in the 200 butterfly (2:04.73).

In the one-meter diving competitions, Bakersfield’s Ross Farance won the men’s event and Clarion’s Jamie Wolf prevailed in the women’s event.

Event 30 Men 800 Yard Freestyle Relay
===============================================================================
NCAA Record:   6:34.57        2004 CAL STATE-BAKERSFIELD
Mroz, Simas, Dawson, Gegotek
School                                               Seed     Finals Points
===============================================================================
1 Drury University  'A'
