PITTSBURGH, Penn., March 11. ALTHOUGH the upcoming NCAA Championships will determine the official titlists of Division I swimming, the College Swimming Coaches Association has named Georgia (women) and California (men) as its national dual-meet champs.<\/p>\n
The dual-meet rankings are determined by a voting panel and were released on nine occasions during the year. Georgia shuffled between the first and second slot during the season while Cal didn't take the top position until the end of the dual-meet campaign.<\/p>\n
Georgia's women finished the season with a 9-0 record and earned a number of impressive victories, including decisions of Auburn, Florida and Texas – the second through fourth-ranked squads.<\/p>\n
"We had a terrific dual meet season on both sides of the ledger," said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle. "I am proud of our ladies finishing the season undefeated, especially with the schedule we faced.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cal earned its No. 1 ranking after closing out the season with a victory over Stanford in what might have been the fastest dual meet in collegiate history. The Golden Bears went 9-0 and had wins over Michigan, Arizona and Southern California. <\/p>\n
