WITH a 24th consecutive PAC-10 Conference championship now stashed away, Stanford will turn its attention to the NCAA Championships. And, by all indications, the Cardinal will be a major factor in Minnesota.

Propelled by Gary Marshall’s conference-record swim in the 200 breaststroke Saturday night, Stanford racked up 932.5 points during the four-day meet. California finished second (882), followed by Southern California (579), Arizona (450), Arizona State (311.5) and Washington (224).

The winner of the 100 breast from Friday, Marshall made a run at the NCAA record in the 200 breast, falling just shy of Brendan Hansen’s 1:52.62 clocking from 2003. Marshall hit the pads in 1:52.71.

Shaun Phillips delivered an upset win for the Cardinal in the 1,650 freestyle where he placed ahead of Southern California’s Larsen Jensen and Ous Mellouli, a pair of Olympians. Phillips won the event in 14:47.70.

Hongzhe Sun added a victory in the 200 backstroke (1:41.61) for the Cardinal, which also picked up points in the eight-lap dorsal from Andy Grant (fourth) and Tobias Oriwol.

Jayme Cramer led four Stanford swimmers into the finals of the 200 butterfly, which he won in a meet-record time of 1:43.09. Southern Cal’s Viktor Bodrogi was second.

The only individual event not won by Stanford was the 100 free, which produced a one-two finish from Cal’s Duje Draganja (42.30) and Rolandas Gimbutis (42.54). Stanford’s Ben Wildman-Tobriner was third in 42.59. Arizona’s Lyndon Ferns was fourth (43.06).

Cal also won the 400 freestyle relay in an impressive 2:49.77. The foursome consisted of Gimbutis, Jonas Tilly, Draganja and Milorad Cavic. Arizona was second in 2:52.85 and Stanford finished third in 2:55.51.

Event 15 Men 1650 Yard Freestyle<br
