NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 4. RECORD-breaking swims were the norm last weekend, when the Tennessee State Championships were held at the Centennial Sportsplex Pool in Nashville. Perhaps the most impressive performances were those of Stephanie Napier.<\/p>\n
A junior at Baylor High, Napier swept the sprint-freestyle events and produced a blazing 22.52 effort in the 50 freestyle. A night later, Napier touched the pads in the 100 free in 50.20. Both swims were state records and erased Sarah Sargent\u2019s name from the record book.<\/p>\n
Not to be overshadowed was Sarah McCall, who picked up Female Swimmer of the Meet honors after winning the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley in state-record time. McCall, from Bearden High, posted a mark of 1:02.56 in the 100 breaststroke and notched a time of 2:02.18 in the I.M., a swim that bettered Tracy Caulkins\u2019 state record (2:03.80) from 1978.<\/p>\n
Other winners were Franklin\u2019s Sarah Peterson in the 200 free (1:49.85), Webb\u2019s Claire Galdun in the 500 free (4:55.41), Bearden\u2019s Annie Broome in the 100 butterfly (55.41) and St. Mary\u2019s Margo McCawley in the 100 back (55.19). Bearden won the 200 medley relay in state-record fashion (1:46.65) and Harpeth Hall prevailed in the 200 free relay (1:38.16) and 400 free relay (3:31.06) and won the team title with 320 points.<\/p>\n
Brooks Stovall was the class of the male competition, setting state records in the 200 and 500 freestyles for Riverdale High. The watches caught Stovall in 1:38.23 for the 200 and 4:21.94 in the 500. Meanwhile, Brad Jones swept the 50 (21.29) and 100 freestyles (46.68) for Farragut.<\/p>\n
The remainder of the boys\u2019 champions included Martin Luther King\u2019s Greg Houchin in the 100 fly (50.09), Montgomery Bell\u2019s Curtis Lovelace in the 100 breast (58.84), Brentwood\u2019s Alan Maher in the 100 back (49.87) and home-schooled Steve Murry in the 200 I.M. (1:52.12.)<\/p>\n
Brentwood was the champion of the 200 medley relay (1:37.10) and the 400 free relay (3:10.39) and Bearden won the 200 free relay in 1:28.09. Brentwood scored 190 points to narrowly win the team competition over McCallie School (189) and Christian Brothers (187).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
