FEDERAL WAY, WA, February 25. Stanford\u2019s women leads at the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 2005 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
The defending champion Cardinal scored 120 points in the two events contested on Wednesday and holds a six-point lead over second-place California, per Cardinal sources. <\/p>\n
Stanford won the 200 medley relay in a season-best NCAA "A" qualifying time of 1:39.69 with a team of Amy Wagner, Caroline Bruce, Dana Kirk and Brooke Bishop. The Cardinal also had a season-best and NCAA "A" qualifying mark of 7:10.50 to finish second in the 800 free relay with a team of Elizabeth Durot, Desiree Stahley, Bruce and Boutwell. <\/p>\n
Durot picked up an NCAA "A" time in the 200 free when she swam a personal-best 1:46.84 to lead off the 800 free relay squad. <\/p>\n
California won the 800 free relay in an NCAA "A" qualifying time of 7:08.37 with a team of Ashley Chandler, Emily Reilly, Erin Silver and Lauren Medina. <\/p>\n
"This was a good start for us tonight," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick. "I'm pleased that we are in the lead. We need to swim really well in prelims each day to put ourselves in position to score well in the finals." <\/p>\n
The four-day short-course yards meet continues Thursday-Saturday with 19 events still be contested over the final three days. Thursday's events include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and 200 free relay. Stanford has won 15 of the 18 Pac-10 Championships contested. <\/p>\n
