THE men of Virginia were in first place after the first of four days of competition Wednesday (February 23) in the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championship, which is being held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>UVa won the 800 freestyle relay in a school record time and also finished third in the 200 medley relay with another school record to score 72 points and lead the competition after two events.<\/p>\n<p>Florida State is second with 64 points.  NC State and Virginia Tech are tied for third with 62 points and North Carolina is fifth with 60 points.  Georgia Tech and Clemson are tied for sixth with 52 points, while Maryland (44) and Duke (40) round out the field.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.\/Bolles School) got the Cavaliers off to a quick start in the 800 free relay by setting a Virginia school and Georgia Tech pool record with his 1:36.40 split in the 200 free.  Anderson was followed in the water by second-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.\/Princeton Day), third-year Fran Crippen (Philadelphia, Pa.\/Germantown Academy), and fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md.\/Walter Johnson). <\/p>\n<p>The foursome set school, pool and ACC meet records with its time of 6:28.03.  The former UVa and ACC meet record was 6:29.13 set in 2001.  The Cavaliers won the event by nearly five seconds over North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia finished third in the 200 medley relay with a NCAA \u201cB\u201d cut and school record time of 1:27.91, just two hundredths of a second behind runners-up Florida State (1:27.89).  NC State won the relay in an ACC record time of 1:27.46.  First-year Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas\/The Woodlands), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia\/Split), Raab and Anderson combined to set the new school record for the Cavaliers.  The former school mark was 1:28.16 set in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The ACC Championship will resume Thursday (February 24), with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ATLANTA, GA, February 25.
