THE Maryland women's swimming and diving team have 469 points and a comfortable lead over defending champion Virginia (391) and North Carolina (336.5) after Fridays third day of the 2005 Women’s ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) won the 400-yard individual medley title, breaking her own school record, as well as the pool record, and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships next month with her time of 4:14.33. Sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) finished third (4:16.97) and junior Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Israel) finished sixth (4:21.34), both `B' cuts.

Sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) took the 100-yard butterfly crown for the second straight year. Her time of 53.77 set a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center mark and narrowly missed the NCAA `A' standard by .02 seconds. Senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and junior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished fourth and seventh, respectively, with times of 54.77 (`B' cut) and 55.97.

Senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) claimed the 200-yard freestyle title and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with her personal-best time of 1:47.56, also a new pool record. The 200-free is her second `A' standard of the meet. Freshman Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) finished fifth with a `B' cut time of 1:49.65.

The Terps closed the night with their fourth ACC relay crown, taking the 400-yard medley relay. Senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), Mulyayeva, deToll and Miller broke the pool mark with an NCAA `B' cut time of 3:40.13. Knepper's leadoff split (54.31) automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard backstroke and breaks her own school record, which she set this morning in the 100-back prelims.

Knepper also placed second in the 100-back finals with a time of 54.64, a `B' standard. Virginia's Brielle White won the event for the third consecutive year.

After three days of competition, the Terps have won eight ACC event titles, including all four relay crowns. They won the 800-free and 200-medley relays on Wednesday, then followed with a victory in the 200-free relay Thursday before adding the 400-medley relay Friday. In addition to tonight's individual titles in the 400-IM, 100-fly and 200-free, Mulyayeva won the 200-IM crown Thursday.

The ACC Championships resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. Follow the meet with Livestats.

Standings After Day 3
1.
