IN what is quickly turning into the Ryan Lochte Show, the University of Florida junior demolished every record in the book by almost a full second in the 200-yard individual medley to highlight Day Two of the SEC Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Florida. And Lochte had to be impressive, as five of the six individual events contested tonight saw the SEC records fall.

Meanwhile, Auburn's depth gave it the lead in the men's team race with FLorida seecond. In the fight for the women's crown, Georgia jumped into the lead, followed by Florida and Auburn.

Lochte, who had broken Rowdy Gaines’ 24 year-old conference record in the 200 free leading off the 800 free relay on Wednesday night, went 1:41.76 in the 200 IM to shatter George Bovell’s SEC and NCAA records and Nate Dusing’s American record. Lochte’s winning splits were 22.94 – 25.25 – 29.89 – 23.68. Look out Michael Phelps!

Auburn’s Eric Shanteau, who was third in both IMs at last summer’s US Olympic Trials, was second tonight in 1:44.84, while teammate Kurt Cady was third in 1:46.44.

In the men’s 500 freestyle, Georgia freshman Sebastian Rouault lowered Matt Cetlinski’s 20 year-old conference mark in winning in the fastest time in the nation thus far this year at 4:15.00. His Georgia teammate, Robert Margalis, was second in 4:17.60, while Florida freshman Tobias Work was third in 4:18.97.

Not to be outdone, Florida newcomer Caroline Burkle went a blazing 4:38.32 in the 500 free to break the SEC record she set in the preliminaries (4:40.81). Auburn’s Adrienne Binder was under the old conference mark taking second in 4:40.86. Florida’s Leah Retrum grabbed third in 4:42.97.

Yet another mark fell, as Auburn’s Kirsty Coventry defended her title in the 200 IM, breaking Maggie Bowen’s SEC mark in 1:55.34. Her teammate Emily Kukors was second in 1:58.21 and Georgia’s Mary DeScenza was third in 1:58.60.

Both 50 freestyles saw conference champions defend their titles. Auburn’s Fred Bousquet won the men’s race in 19.57, leading eight swimmers under 20 seconds. Kentucky’s Tim Patrick was second with two Auburn swimmers, Ryan Wochomurka and George Bovell, tying for third.

Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce of Georgia broke the SEC mark in the women’s 50, winning in 21.91. Her Georgia teammate, Amanda Weir, was second in 22.49, while Auburn freshman Kara Denby was third in 22.63.

Concluding the night Lochte garnered another SEC record in leading off Florida’s winning 400 medley relay team in 45.19 for the backstroke, not far off the American record of 44.92. Corey Welch (54.30), Gabe Mangabeira (45.90) and Darian Townsend (42.48) rounded out the splits for the winning team. Auburn (3:09.66) and Kentucky (3:12.22) followed.

In the women’s 400-medley relay, Florida garnered the gold in a tight race that saw the top three teams separated by only 0.71 seconds. Maureen Farrell (54.22), Vipa Bernhardt (1:00.21), Candace Weiman (52.63) and Caroline Burcke (48.16) led the Gators. Georgia, with a sterling 51.36 fly leg by Mary DeScenza, was second in 3:35.29 and Auburn with Kristy Coventry leading off in 52.63 was third in 3:35.93.

Georgia leads the women’s competition with 314, followed by Florida (273), Auburn (256), Kentucky (204), S. Carolina (155), Alabama (127), LSU (112), Arkansas (99) and Tennessee (76).

Auburn bounced back from a relay disqualification on the first night to take the lead in the men’s team contest with 342 points. Florida is second with 300, followed by Georgia (231), Kentucky (204), Alabama (196.5), Tennessee (127), LSU (96.5) and S.
