AUBURN, AL, February 11. AUBURN reports that the Southeastern Conference Diving Championships begin on Friday morning in Gainesville, Fla.<\/p>\n
Auburn sends three men and three women to the diving championships. Of the men, Steven Segerlin and Matt Bricker will be hoping to add to the school's dominance of the platform of late. Bricker was the SEC Champion on the platform as a freshman in 2002 before his now-graduated teammate Caesar Garcia won the event in 2003 and 2004. Though he missed the 2003 championships with an injury, he returned in 2004 to place second. Segerlin was also a force at last year's championships, placing third on the platform. Senior Andrew Sivulka placed 10th on the platform last season at the conference level.<\/p>\n
On the springboards, Bricker has finished as high as sixth on the 1-mere (2002 and 2004) and fourth on the 3-meter (2002). Segerlin's earned a seventh-place finish on the 1-meter and a 10th-place finish on the 3-meter last season while Sivulka finished seventh on the 3-meter and 14th on the 1-meter at last year's championships.<\/p>\n
Auburn's biggest challenges on all three levels should come from Georgia's Chris Colwill and Tennessee's Jevon Tarantino.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, senior Rachel Korth, sophomore Lynnsey Segraves and freshman JamieLea Strating will all be competing for the Tigers. Korth is a platform specialist, owning the school record, who is looking to best her seventh-place showing of a year ago, the highest of her career. Her best finishes on the springboards also came last year as she placed 17th on the 1-meter and 20th on the 3-meter.<\/p>\n
This will be the first appearance Segraves as she was injured prior to the competition last season.<\/p>\n
"We have a tremendous team this year. They have worked hard and they are ready to get the swimming and diving championships off to a great start," AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer said. "Steven is by far our most consistent competitor and has proven that on all three levels. He should be a three-event finalist. Our goal is to come away ahead of Florida on the men's side and ahead of Georgia on the women's side. Rachel leads with her leadership and example and has made tremendous strides over her four years here and we will look for her to final on platform."<\/p>\n
The diving portion runs through Sunday, Feb. 13th and could provide a leg-up for the swimming teams once they arrive in Gainesville next week. Swimming begins on Wednesday, Feb. 16, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 19th.<\/p>\n
