Xiong Guoming, who tested positive for steroids in 1994 at the Asian Games and served a two-year suspension, now faces a lifetime ban. Xiong, the star of the 94 Asian Games was stripped of the four gold medals he won in Hiroshima that year. He returned to competition at the 1998 Asian Games last December, winning gold and setting a Games record in the 200m individual medley. Xiong stands to lose that medal as well. <\/p>\n
The second Chinese swimmer to test positive for clenbuterol is Wei Wang. China has two top swimmers with the same name, and it was unclear whether it was the female or male Wei who tested positive. <\/p>\n
Xiong faces an automatic lifetime ban for a second offense, while Wei faces a ban of four years if the B sample confirms the original test. If banned, they would bring to 11 the number of Chinese swimmers banned by FINA in the last six months alone for using performance-enhancing drugs.
