LONDON, February 4. BRITISH swimming will receive over \u00a317.87 million (US$33.71m) in funding over the next four years as part of a \u00a3315m (US$594)package awarded to 32 priority and development sports within England.<\/p>\n
Sport England's funding announcement has been welcomed by the Amateur Swimming Association, the national governing body, and will help to implement the ASA's strategic plan for the future.<\/p>\n
"This funding demonstrates Sport England's confidence that swimming together with the ASA can make a significant contribution to its start, stay and succeed in sport agenda," said ASA Chief Executive David Sparkes.<\/p>\n
"It will enable us to help the organisation in driving forward an even greater level of participation in swimming as well as helping the Government with its activity agenda within its health strategy.<\/p>\n
"Inevitably we would have liked more funding as we believe swimming can contribute even further but we will now be working with Sport England to try to unlock additional funding from other agencies which will enable us to drive swimming forward as a major sport in England."<\/p>\n
The ASA's total funding for the four years is \u00a317.873m ($33708) with \u00a35.493 ($19.358) allocated for 2005\/06. <\/p>\n
It will help to meet participation, success and modernisation targets, and spans grassroots to international elite performance. The funding focuses particularly on developing a thriving infrastructure of clubs, coaches and volunteers.<\/p>\n
Ultimately the awards are designed to create a more active and successful sporting nation while ensuring the production of talented athletes on the world stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
