THE Virginia Tech men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving teams fell to <a href=&quot;http:\/\/www.pittsburghpanthers.com\/&quot;>Pittsburgh<\/a> Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up, reported VT.<\/p>\n<p>The women lost 139.5-103.5, while the men&#39;s match came down to the last relay, which the Panthers won by one-tenth of a second to secure a 125-118 win over the Hokies.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#39;s side, the Hokies&#39; 400 medley relay team took first in a time of 3:22.68. <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/alberi.html&quot;>Tom Alberi<\/a>, <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/furlong.html&quot;>Kevin Furlong<\/a>, <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/beard.html&quot;>Scott Beard<\/a> and <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/sherman.html&quot;>Aaron Sherman<\/a> were on the relay team.<\/p>\n<p>Alberi continued his winning way in the 50 freestyle, coming in first with a time of 21.13. He also finished third in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Furlong won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:05.08, while also placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.82.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/czaplicki.html&quot;>Zac Czaplicki<\/a> won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.05. He also won the 100 freestyle in 46.60.<\/p>\n<p>Beard took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.61. In the 400 freestyle relay, Beard&#39;s squad finished second in 3:05.06. Sherman, Czaplicki and <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/bova.html&quot;>Jake Bova<\/a> were also on the relay team.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <a href=&quot;\/swimming\/players\/2004\/calado.html&quot;>Gus Calado<\/a> took second place in the 1,000 freestyle with a mark of 9:37.16.
