LARAMIE, WY, January 30. THE University of Wyoming men\u2019s swimming and diving team fell to BYU 96.5-146.5 and the women lost by a score of 91.5-151.5, Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah, report the Cowboys.<\/p>\n
The Cowboys (4-3 overall, 1-2 MWC), won five of 13 events on the night. Freshman Henry Holmberg led the way for Wyoming winning both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. He swam a time of 9:49.09 in the 1000 and followed with a time of 4:40.28 in the 500. Junior Gene Birks swam the race of the day as he set a new pool record in the 100 butterfly, touching in at a time of 48.60. <\/p>\n
Senior US Olympian Scott Usher won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.81 and junior John Lynch won the 1-meter diving competition, finishing with a score of 305.78. <\/p>\n
The Cowgirls (3-4 overall, 2-3 MWC), took just three events from BYU on the day. Sophomore Heidi Thorson won the first event for Wyoming as she swam to a time of 58.24 in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Tamara Lehnertz swam to a first place time of 53.31 in the 100 freestyle and sophomore Holly Hansen won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:19.49.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were much better as a group today,\u201d said UW head coach Tom Johnson. \u201cI think that we scored about as many points as we ever have at BYU. We weren\u2019t as sharp as we could have been but I am proud of the improved effort we gave.<\/p>\n
\u201cGene was awesome in the 100 fly, Scott was as good as always in the breast, Heidi swam really well in the 100 fly and it was nice to get Tamara back and she did a great job as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Wyoming swimming and diving team will return to action next weekend as they travel to Colorado State and Air Force. The Cowgirls will take on Colorado State on Friday night at 5 p.m. and both the men and women will take on Air Force on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Wyoming divers will be competing in the Air Force Diving Invite on both Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
