KNOXVILLE, TN, January 26. GEORGIA\u2019s men earned a 130-100 victory against No. 15 Tennessee at the UT Student Aquatic Center — Site of the 1973 Men's NCAAs — in Knoxville Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Behind double wins by diver Chris Colwill, Robert Margalis and Gil Stovall the Bulldogs (4-4) picked up their second straight victory against the Vols in their home pool. Georgia won in Knoxville for the first time during the 2003 season. <\/p>\n
\u00b3We are really proud of the win up here,\u00b2 said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. \u00b3It is always hard to get a win here. Tennessee is tough, especially up here. We have lost more than we have won against them, so this is sweet victory. We have a good men\u00b9s team, and these guys are really coming around. We feel good about where we are right now.\u00b2<\/p>\n
Stovall won two individual races on the day, first touching in 1:51.62 to take top honors in the 200-yard individual medley. He returned to the pool to lead a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard butterfly, stopping the clock in 1:49.45. Jonathan Schmidt took second in 1:51.84.<\/p>\n
Margalis, who finished second to Stovall in the 200-yard IM, picked up victories of his own in the 500-yard freestyle (4:30.90) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.26).<\/p>\n
\u00b3Robert did a heck of a job today,\u00b2 added Bauerle. \u00b3Gil Stovall was terrific in the IM and fly as well as our relay.\u00b2<\/p>\n
The No. 12 Bulldogs gained valuable points from Colwill, as he won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving events, topping Vol All-American Jevon Tarantino. Colwill amassed an overall score of 363.75 to win the 1-meter and tallied an award of 352.72 on the 3-meter.<\/p>\n
\u00b3Chris continues to do all the things he needs to do to keep winning,\u00b2 said Bauerle. <\/p>\n
Other individual winners include Matt Owen (1000y free) and Peter Osborn (200y back). Georgia got runner-up performances from Damian Alleyne (200y free) and Josh Laban (50y and 100y free). Georgia finished second in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays and swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
\u00b3This was a hard-fought victory,\u00b2 said Bauerle. \u00b3We are ready to get back to Athens. This team is much improved from a year ago. We are much deeper than in years past. That is going to help us a lot at the NCAA level.\u00b2<\/p>\n
Georgia will return to action on Feb. 5, as the men and women host South Carolina in the regular-season finale at 1 pm.<\/p>\n
