BERLIN, January 22. MARKUS Rogan, of Austria, (pictured) set the second day of the Berlin round of the World Cup alight when he missed the world record over 200 metres backstroke by just 15-hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n
In 1:50.67 he established a European record but missed Aaron Peirsol's
\nglobal standard by the tiniest of margins as he finished well ahead of the
\npack, American Randall Bal second on 1:52.05. <\/p>\n
At the half-way mark of the 200 metres freestyle, Ryk Neethling of South
\nAfrica, was 0.06 seconds up on Ian Thorpe's world record pace but, in a race of his own, the field well back, faded well off the Australian's best return speed to win the race in 1min 42.75.<\/p>\n
After racing with a sprained finger, Neethling said: "I had to race hard
\nfrom the start because there was no-one in the race who could match my
\nspeed. If I'd have had stronger opposition I think I'd have gone under the
\n1:42 mark."<\/p>\n
Oleg Lisogor, of Ukraine, is back to best in a short-course pool and
\nclocked the best time in the world this season over 100 metres breaststroke
\nto defeat Ed Moses, the world record holder from America, 57.94 to 58.10.<\/p>\n
Therese Alshammar (pictured below) won the 100 metres freestyle in the first 20 metres of the race, by which time she had established a lead of more than half a body length. The likes of German Petra Dallmann have, of late, then been able to catch up with the world record holder as the race goes on, but Alshammar looks to be shaping up to her form of 2000, the year in which she won the Olympic silver medal over 50 metres, and maintained her lead in Berlin. The clock stopped at 53.32, with Dallmann second on 54.10 and Solenne Figues of France third on 54.73.<\/p>\n
