THE No. 4 Arizona women\u2019s swimming and diving team defeated No. 7 California 144-99 Friday afternoon, maintaining an undefeated record of 7-0 (5-0 Pac10). The No. 5 Arizona men\u2019s team fell to the No. 4 Golden Bears for their second loss of the season 136-97.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s team won 11 events, including both diving boards, beginning with the 400y medley relay team of junior Jenna Gresdal, junior Erin Sieper, sophomore Whitney Myers and freshman Courtney Cashion, who won the race with a time of 3:43.88. Senior Emily Mason dominated both distance freestyle events winning the 1000y freestyle (9:56.76) as well as the 500y freestyle (4:50.98).<\/p>\n<p>In the 200y freestyle, freshman Lacey Nymeyer finished second with a time of 1:49.15.  Gresdal and Cashion took first and third place in the 50y freestyle with Gresdal in first-place with a time of 23.47 and Cashion at 23.90. Mason also won the 200y individual medley (2:04.46) and Myers finished second (2:04.98). Myers later won the 200y butterfly with a time of 2:02.56.<\/p>\n<p>Nymeyer finished first in the 100y freestyle (50.69) and classmate Cashion was third (51.11). Gresdal placed second in the 200y backstroke (1:59.74) and senior Jessica Hayes came in fourth (2:03.08). Sieper swam the 200y breaststroke winning the race with a time of 2:18.47. In the final swimming event for the women, the 400y free relay team of Nymeyer, junior Marshi Smith, junior Ryann Hackett and Hayes won with a time of 3:26.72.<\/p>\n<p>On the diving boards, senior Daniela Bemme placed first in both the 1 and 3-meter competitions. Bemme scored 276.75 points on the 1-meter and 276.60 points on the 3-meter. Senior Claire Febvay finished second on both boards scoring 243.97 points on the 1-meter and 263.03 on the 3-meter. Senior Megan Chambers took third-place in the 1-meter competition with 231.82 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniela had an excellent day today,\u201d said head diving coach Michele Mitchell-Rocha. \u201c I am very pleased with the girls and their ability to compete this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the men\u2019s team, the 400y medley relay team of freshmen Nick Thoman, Ivan Barnes, Albert Subirats and Jonas Persson finished third with a time of 3:20.10. Junior Tyler DeBerry took second-place in the 1000y freestyle (9:24.30) as freshman Matt Biel was third (9:24.54).  <\/p>\n<p>In a close race in the 200y freestyle, sophomore Adam Ritter placed second with a time of 1:39.38. Junior Lyndon Ferns blew away the competition in the 50y freestyle (20.18) and the 100y freestyle (44.29) winning both events. Thoman finished second in the 200y backstroke (1:49.21) and DeBerry was also second in the 500y freestyle (4:34.53).<\/p>\n<p>In the 200y breaststroke, Barns finished first with a time of 2:02.65 and senior Nate Stevens was second (2:08.23). To finish the meet, the 400y free relay team of Ferns, Persson, Ritter and senior Simon Burnett won with a time of 3:00.44.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not quite right on the men\u2019s team yet, we are not all healthy,\u201d said head swimming coach Frank Busch. \u201cThe women are all set though; they had a really good meet. I knew that Cal would be really good, but this is the time of year when we have to come ready to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well, junior John Collier was the single male competitor from the Arizona squad. Collier won both events finishing with 310.35 points on the 1-meter board and 368.32 points on the 3-meter. \u201cJohn\u2019s 3-meter performance was outstanding,\u201d said Mitchell-Rocha. \u201cThis shows that he can be a force on either board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday was an opportunity to get the bugs out,\u201d said Mitchell-Rocha. \u201cStanford has a strong team which will make competition challenging for both teams tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TUCSON, Ariz., January 23.
